Manufacturing of Cold Heading Wires
Cold Heading Wires (CHQ wires) are a
creation of hot and cold processes that are needed to best suit for the
creation of other cold headed parts that serve the purpose of its body. The
wire must suit to cold processing and the final use for the finished part. Cold
heading wires have vast and variable applications in transport, building,
chemical, electronics, aerospace, and marine industries. Thus, realizing that
it has such critical usage, the material used for its manufacturing forms the
most crucial concern. This is also because the finished performance of the wire
shall reflect the initial properties and integrity of the wire. Precision
Drawell, a unit of Khandelwal Group has been committed to the manufacturing of
different grades of steel wire and wire products since 1985. It also
manufactures CHQ wires for applications in infrastructure and engineering
industries.
Cold heading process is the process of
altering initial steel blanks into a finished product through force, a series
of tools and dies. In the process, the actual volume of steel remains unchanged
but it impacts the tensile strength. Owing to the attributes of high ductility
and attitude towards the tempering process, cold heading quality wires are
available in various grades to suit the needs of the client and requirements of
the projects. Aluminum, brass, bronze, boron, steel, copper, nickel, silver,
stainless steel and carbon steel are some of the common options in wire
forming. They also hold up to the cold and strenuous working. Precision Drawell
is equipped with an inbuilt mechanical laboratory to test the strength of the
steel that comes in for the manufacture of wire. Once the CHQ wire is formed,
it is coiled around a spool for easy shipping and transportation. Before the
cold heading begins, the wire is cut to the desired lengths and a
pre-straightening device is used to correct the curves and kinks so that the
material directly flows into the subsequent equipment.
Cold heading is a high-speed manufacturing process.
This type of forging is carried out without the application of heat. The
process is volume specific and converts a specific slug into a finished part
that is intricately shaped. It is for this reason that besides the various
application of cold heading wires, these wires are also used as a raw material
for the purpose of production of fasteners such as bolts, screws, nuts, rivets,
nails, and some of the other similar yet complex parts. An important fact to
consider the use of CHQ wires for fastener industry is to consider the com-positional limits, inclusion rates, impurities, surface defects, and even
the final coatings with respect to the intended use of the fasteners.
Traditionally, fasteners were manufactured using the thread cutting methods.
However, the trends are now moving towards the cold working process to cut down
the cost and increasing productivity at the same time. Precision Drawell today
has a huge drawing capacity and size ranges to produce world-class CHQ wires.
Thus providing good surface finish and dimensional accuracies to the fasteners.
